State Mandated
Health and Safety Committee Update
Many Association members
have inquired about the status of the District's Health
and Safety Committee. Members have also inquired about
how the information in the NYCOSH report is being addressed
by the District. The following is a summary of the progress
of this committee:
- The Association brought the District's
lack of compliance with the Commissioner of Education's
regulations (see Regulation 8 NYCRR 155 effective
October 7, 1999) to its attention back in October,
2006.
- In November, 2006, after the Association
informed the District that they were years out of
compliance, the District formed this mandated committee.
- The committee is comprised of representatives
from each bargaining unit, parents and administrators.
Interim Superintendent for Business, Charles Snyder
and Board of Education Trustee, Steve Badala are
the co-chairpersons of the committee. Brad Lindell,
Connetquot Teachers Association Vice-President,
is the Association's representative on the committee.
- To date there have only been two
meetings, the first taking place February 15, 2007.
- The first meeting focused on the
protocol and procedures for bringing health and
safety concerns to the committee. The development
of this protocol is part of the committee's responsibilities.
- The second scheduled meeting took
place on March 29, 2007. The second meeting continued
to focus on the development of procedures. It also
focused on the NYCOSH report and on reviewing the
Baldwin School District's Indoor Air
Quality Manual in order to develop
such a manual for the Connetquot School District.
- A meeting scheduled March 8, 2007
was cancelled.
- The next Health and Safety Committee
meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 18, 2007.
- To date, there has been no protocol
established or implemented to bring health and safety
concerns to the committee.
- Committee members are contacting
other districts to inquire about how they have formed
and implemented their health and safety committee.
The Association remains extremely
concerned regarding the lack of a fully functioning
Health and Safety Committee. The Association is presently
investigating how the District addressed the lack
of this mandated committee over the years on official
New York State documents.
The Association leadership
is committed to continuing to address health and safety
issues in the District. It will continue to keep
members informed about the progress of the District's
Health and Safety Committee.
While there
is no procedure in place for bringing health and safety
issues to the committee, members are encouraged to file
a work order and send a copy to the Connetquot Teachers
Association Office, care of Brad Lindell at the CHS.
Any past Health & Safety issues that have not been
address should be brought to the attention of the Connetquot
Teachers Association leadership as soon as possible.
